Lochnagar Scotch Whisky
Royal Lochnagar Scotch whisky distillery started distilling on the south bank of The River Dee in 1845, close to the estate of Balmoral. Before this the distillery on the north bank of the river, built in 1826 by a former illicit distiller, was burnt down by the illegal competition.
In 1848 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert took over the lease of Balmoral Castle. In the same year they were invited to tour the distillery and sample the whisky.
Prince Albert accepted his invitation and arrived the next day with Queen Victoria and their three eldest Children.
The Queen suitably impressed granted Lochnagar with a Royal Warrant.
The distillery was bought by John Dewar and Sons Ltd in 1916.
John Dewar & Sons Ltd joined with the Distillers Company Ltd. in 1925 which later became part of Scottish Malt Distillers in 1930.
During the post war period a great deal of alterations took place to the distillery building and the machinery traditionally powered by water and steam, were replaced with electrical equipment and parts of the farm buildings were converted to make a Visitor Centre.
